On Monday, Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States of America, announced the launch of her new policy initiative to promote the social and emotional well-being of children called “Be Best.”
Talking at a ceremony that was held in the White House Rose Garden, the FLOTUS outlined the three pillars that Be Best is set to address: responsible social media use, the effects of the opioid crisis on children, and physical and emotional health.
The first lady stated: “We can and should teach social and self-awareness positive relationship skills, and responsible decision making.”
She added: “Let us teach our children the difference between right and wrong, and encourage them to Be Best in their individual paths in life.”
The launch of “Be Best” is the most visible action of Mrs Trump so far as the first lady of the US and comes after over a year during which she has settled largely out of the public eye. The launch also represented a very noticeable break from the priorities and leadership style of her husband.
Nowhere was Trump’s style more apparent on Monday than when the first lady warned regarding the damage that online bullying can do to the children, and the significance of teaching young people how to respect other people online.
She stated: “When children learn positive online behaviours early on, social media can be used in productive ways and can effect positive change.” She noted that too often, social media is utilised in “negative” ways.
She added: “It is our responsibility as adults to educate and remind [children] that when they are using their voices, whether verbally or online, they must choose their words wisely and speak with respect and compassion.”
The call of Melania Trump for greater respect online stands in contrast to the way that her husband, US President Donald Trump, usually uses social media as a means to publicly attack, belittle, or insult his opponents.
On Monday, the president made an impromptu appearance at the Rose Garden ceremony where he lauded the first lady for her dedication and compassion to help others.
Trump said: “Americans have been touched by her sincerity, moved by her grace and lifted by her love.”
He added: “Melania, your care, and compassion for our nation’s children inspires us all.”
