The former national security adviser of Donald Trump has been accused of lying to the FBI about the Russia investigation.

According to court documents, Michael Flynn was charged with “willfully and knowingly” giving “false, fictitious and fraudulent statements” concerning his meeting with the Russian ambassador to the United States. According to media reports, he is anticipated to plead guilty.

Flynn is the first former official of the Trump administration to be charged in relation to the Russia investigation of Robert Mueller, a special counsel. Three former aides of the Trump campaign have been charged, and one has already pleaded guilty.

Flynn is cited for wrongly claiming that he did not request the Russian ambassador to “refrain from escalating the situation in response to sanctions that the United States had imposed against Russia that same day.” He also claimed not to remember the Russian ambassador informing him that Russia had “chosen to moderate its response to those sanctions as a result of his request.”
