At this point, foldable phones have not gone much further than the concept stage. However, people can bet that Apple will be there when these kinds of phones do enter the market,
According to a recent analyst report from the Bank of America Merrill Lynch, foldable phones could happen for Apple’s iPhones as soon as 2020. Such a form factor would give the iPhone the potential to change into an iPad.
Wamshi Mohan, an analyst, wrote: “Our checks also suggest that Apple is working with suppliers on a foldable phone (that potentially could double up as a tablet) for launch in 2020.” The report is based on recent meetings with the suppliers of Apple in Asia.
It is hardly confirmation. However, it is yet another sign that Apple will be aiming to shake things up with a move that is away from the purely iterative yearly iPhone releases. Late in 2017, the company was awarded a patent for a device that has “a flexible display” and the ability to be folded.
As evidenced by the patents that are held by Samsung and Microsoft, other companies are also looking into the folding display business. However, the technology itself has been delayed to arrive. Samsung has offered up some concepts. However, the most recent forecast suggests that they would not surface until 2019 at the earliest.
Of course, none of this facts answers the question of whether or not a phone that has a folding display is something that the consumers even want.
