On Sunday, the head of consumer business, Richard Yu, said that the upcoming P20 smartphone of Huawei would be “much better” compared to the iPhone X of Apple.
The P20 is scheduled to launch during an event that will be held in Paris in March.
During a briefing with reporters following the launch of the MateBook X Pro laptop of Huawei, Yu was talking about how the tech company continues to invest so that it can grow. He revealed his thoughts regarding how the smartphone market would be able to consolidate, with various smaller players failing.
Many of the reporters in the room were making use of various iPhone models so that they could record the briefing session. As Yu was discussing the new innovations of Huawei, he snatched up an iPhone X and went off his script to explain how the P20 will be better compared to the $999 offering of Apple.
“We will have some very big, bold, big innovation on camera technology. It will be much much better than all the phones,” stated Yu. “Maybe I’m not humble, but ours is better, it’s not just a little bit better, but much better.”
Huawei has only been lurking in the smartphone market for a short period of time. However, it has grown very quickly and is currently the third-largest player in terms of market share, behind Apple and Samsung. Yu thinks that Huawei can surpass Apple within the coming years.
Yu stated: “Globally we are [a] top three smartphone supplier, but maybe in this year or next year, within one to two years, our market share will be top two. We keep strong growth. Sooner or later we will be number one market share,”
