Mary Lou McDonald has been proven to be the sole candidate that is nominated to become president of Sinn Fein as Gerry Adams, the incumbent president, steps down.
McDonald has been a Teachta Dala (TD) since 2011 currently for Dublin Central. She was the only person to place her name forward for the said role before nominations were closed last Friday.
Adams had been the leader of the party since 1983. He announced his plans to step down in November.
Today, the high council of Sinn Fein met in Belfast to formally endorse the nominee for president and a special party conference to elect the new leader is scheduled next month.
Today, McDonald state: “We have to grow our party, modernise and be fit for purpose, but we always hold true to our vision.”
