Fan of Nutella all over the world have been into panic as a response to news that the recipe of their beloved chocolate-hazelnut spread has been changed.
On their Facebook page, the Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg (Hamburg Consumer Protection Centre) announced that Ferrero, the company that is behind Nutella, has secretly modified the recipe to include more powdered skimmed milk and more sugar.
The sugar content has increased from 55.9 percent to 56.3 percent, and the milk from 7.5 percent to 8.7 percent.
The consumer group said that the new Nutella now has a lighter colour, and they infer that by increasing the milk content, the company was able to save costs on cocoa.
In a world where most companies are attempting to reduce the sugar content of their food products in order to appeal to customers who are more health-conscious, the said change has not been well received.
While Ferrero insists that small alterations such as these are usual industry practice and would not affect the taste too much, many Nutella lovers are worried that their favourite chocolate spread will no longer be the same.
Some consumers are even threatening to boycott it.
Ferrero has been contacted to comment regarding this matter and is yet to give a response.
