Sadiq Khan has joined Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, in calling for Theresa May to dismiss Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary.
The London Mayor stated that Johnson had not done his “first duty” in the role, which is diplomacy.
Talking on the Andrew Marr show, he was discussing the case of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe who is presently imprisoned in Tehran because of trumped up charges of sedition.
Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who works for Reuters news agency’s charitable arm, has been detained in the country since April of last year when she went to visit her parents to celebrate Persian New Year.
However, this week, Johnson possibly made her situation even worse when he incorrectly claimed that Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been in the country “training journalists” while talking to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee.
Iranian state TV regarded it as “proof” that Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been there to teach journalism as part of a plan “to topple the Iranian regime.”
He later declined to issue an apology when he was asked to in Parliament although Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who is a joint British-Iranian citizen, meets new charges of spreading “propaganda” though he later issued an apology “if any words of [his] have been taken out of context and misconstrued to cause anxiety to Nazanin’s family.”
He talked to his Iranian counterpart in an effort to undo the damage. However, Richard Ratcliffe, Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s husband, has requested him to take him to Iran to see his wife and daughter.
Ratcliffe has not been able to see his wife or Gabriella, their now three-year-old daughter, who is currently living in Tehran with her maternal grandparents.
Khan said that it was important that Johnson “clarified” his comments since they had been used by Iranian State TV in order to justify their treatment of Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
Khan called for Johnson to apologise and get back to her home in north London or resign.
Kahn stated: “This is the latest gaffe made by own Foreign Secretary. He has offended the Libyans in relation to what he said about Sirte being ‘the new Dubai should they get rid of the dead bodies’. He’s offended the Americans by saying President Obama is anti-British because he’s ‘part Kenyan’.
“He’s offended the Spanish, he’s offended Sikhs with what he said about whisky tariffs in the Gurdwara. I think he has got to go.
“I think he is our Foreign Secretary whose job is diplomacy in the best interests of our country and if Theresa May was a strong Prime Minister she would have sacked him a long time ago.
“There are questions about why she appointed him in the first place, she did but sure he must have done enough to go.”
