Super Mario Run has been hailed as the most famous free game of 2017 on the App Store of Apple.
The first official Mario game from Nintendo to be introduced to the iPad and iPhone was able to top the free download charts on both the tablet and the smartphone.
The top paid-for game for iPhone was Heads Up!, a guessing game, with Minecraft, the block-building sandbox game, as the best-selling paid-for game on iPad.
Aside from the games, users of the iOS app were obviously interested to expand their horizons as the Official DVSA Theory Test Kit for Car Drivers app was announced as the top-selling paid-for iPhone app of 2017.
Social networks were a regular theme in the lists of the most popular apps, as were streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify.
The free iPhone apps top 10 is almost like a checklist of obvious downloads, with Instagram, Snapchat, Messenger, and Facebook all featuring, together with Bitmoji – emphasising just how popular emoji-based conversation has grown.
YouTube and Google Maps completed the top 10, with the likes of Gmail, Amazon, and Uber sitting just outside.
On the iPad and its bigger screen, it is probably no surprise that illustration app Procreate, a creative app, was the top seller of 2017.
WhatsApp Messenger was also announced as the most downloaded free app by users of the iPhone, ahead of Instagram and Snapchat. The messaging service has over a billion users worldwide.
On the iPad, the official YouTube app was the most popular free download.
